Serena Williams had cringe-worthy interview with Max Verstappen at Monaco GP

Serena Williams is looking to cap off her incredible tennis career with a fairy-tale victory at the US Open, which is underway in New York.

The younger Williams sister has won an incredible 23 Grand Slam singles’ titles, one short of Australian Margaret Court's all-time record. She is also playing in the doubles with sibling Venus before retiring from the sport at the age of 40. The Williams sisters are also keen racing fans and have attended several F1 meetings in the United States, including this year’s first-ever Miami Grand Prix.

And last year, Serena was trackside for the Monaco Grand Prix shortly before the start of the French Open in Paris. As a star guest, she was invited to join winner Max Verstappen for his post-race interview, conducted by former F1 racer David Coulthard.

Appearing surprised, the pair greeted each other politely, if rather awkwardly, before Coulthard asked Serena for her thoughts on the race.

“It’s such an amazing Grand Prix and such a fantastic honour to be here as a fan and see such incredible athletes,” she said.

Serena was then bizarrely asked if attending the race was the “perfect way” to prepare for a Grand Slam.

She replied: “It is, we’re all training really, really hard and it’s always good to see amazing athletes, so congratulations [gestures to Verstappen]. It’s always good to see and be inspired really.”

Coulthard followed up with another cringe-worthy question, asking if she had any advice for Verstappen on how he could improve on his dominant performance around the streets of Monaco.

Serena politely responded: “I don’t think I’m in the position to give advice right now in this arena, but a good job to all the racers. I think everyone did really well.”

With extra time on her hands in retirement, it would be no surprise to see Serena attend the United States Grand Prix in Austin in October.
